Website copy revisions or new scope? A practical guide for designers
Published · By Noor Intelligence
A revision improves the agreed deliverable. A scope change asks for a different or additional deliverable. The distinction depends on your actual brief, so write down the request and compare it with what was agreed.
Classify the request before estimating it
- Factual correction: the supplied phone number was wrong.
- Copy revision: the same service needs clearer wording or a different tone.
- Additional scope: the client now wants separate pages for five more services.
These examples are a working framework, not a substitute for the agreement. If the original service included research or multiple approaches, a request that looks additional in another project may already be included in yours.
Use a small decision log
For every request, record: requested change, reason, affected page, original brief reference, classification and next decision. For a fictional brochure site, “replace the home page headline” may be a revision. “Turn the brochure site into a booking platform” needs a separate discussion of design, development and content.
A clear approval record helps show which version the client saw. It does not mean that every later correction is automatically chargeable.
Respond with a choice
We can revise [agreed section] within the current round. Adding [new deliverable] changes the agreed page list, so I’ll prepare a separate scope and price for you to review before we begin that work. Would you prefer to complete the current pages first or discuss the expanded brief?
Make the consequences clear without assuming the client intended to ask for unpaid work. Sometimes the request reveals a misunderstanding that can be resolved through a short conversation.
Keep content and build costs distinct
Extra pages can affect more than writing time. They may need new layouts, navigation, images, review and development. The Noor UK Website Cost Calculator can help explore an indicative project budget. It is a planning tool, not a quotation or a determination of what your client owes.
Define a consolidated revision round
Ask the named approver to combine feedback rather than sending contradictory updates across channels. Confirm the affected version and agreed deadline. If a new stakeholder introduces a new direction, review the brief together rather than counting each email as a revision.
For Launch Rescue’s £149 pilot, the offer includes up to five pages and one consolidated revision. Additional work needs a separate written agreement. The copywriting partner guide lists other useful questions to resolve before buying content support.
