How to pause a website project when client content is missing
Published · By Noor Intelligence
When a website cannot progress without client information, agree its status explicitly. A pause should clarify what is complete, what is missing and what needs to happen before work restarts.
Check the actual dependency
Before proposing a pause, identify the blocked task. Can the layout proceed while services are confirmed? Are you waiting for one photograph or every page? A project should not be labelled blocked merely because one optional item is absent.
Use a page-by-page list with three states: ready, needs confirmation and not supplied. The content checklist gives you a consistent way to collect that information.
Offer a practical route forward
Explain the missing inputs and offer a manageable way to supply them: a short interview, a small factual questionnaire or a separately agreed content service. Confirm what the client can realistically do. A deadline without an achievable task is unlikely to resolve the problem.
Record the pause in plain language
The project is awaiting [specific material] before [stage] can proceed. Completed work is [summary]. Please confirm whether you would like to arrange a content session or agree a later restart. Once the required inputs are ready, we will confirm the next available working slot and an updated timetable.
This is suggested operational wording. Do not add fees, change payment milestones or impose new terms without checking the existing agreement and reaching an appropriate written agreement. A pause is not automatically a cancellation or acceptance of unfinished work.
Create a restart checklist
- The agreed page list is still current.
- The missing facts and materials have arrived.
- The named approver is available.
- Any changed scope is agreed.
- The studio has confirmed a realistic working slot.
Read the scope-change guide if the business has changed while the project waited. Do not restart from an outdated brief just because a file finally arrived.
Keep payment questions separate
If an agreed invoice is overdue, use a separate factual reminder. Good Chaser provides correspondence preparation for overdue invoices; it is a companion product rather than a rule about when your website project can be billed. The underlying agreement still matters.
Resume with confirmed information
Review the source material, issue a draft and follow a version-specific approval process. If the client can participate but needs help producing the copy, Launch Rescue’s £149 pilot offers a scoped route from interview to content handoff.
